OctPoWriMo Poem 29 – Lay Together Like Angels

Why did I walk out here today?
To the edge of this fallow field?
Was it the way the pale blue sky
Deepens slightly at the horizon
Just before dusk?
Or the way the shadows fall
Long and purple on the snow?

I sense a dip in the land
Far over the horizon.
A place where the ice stays uncracked
Long into May
And badlands begin to form
Like the brown backs of buffalo

Or was I just remembering
The night we came here
Late, called by the utter darkness
And the Perseids
And lay together
Like angels
Flown down to sing.
