Fools’ Halo

The businessman in the elevator

(adjusting his blue silk tie)

scoffs at the idea (he never looks up).

The bloody-kneed gullible

herd themselves toward a narrow bridge

(few cross it, thinking themselves unworthy of the other side).

But we fools (take my hand!)

with the stones behind our hearts,

with our scrambled dreams,

with our hopeless, secret thoughts,

look up,

and see it:

our halo.
