Vegetables

The carrots have
nothing to tell you
but what you might have learned
from the rutabaga,
had you bothered.

(Rutabaga,
being disliked,
knows everything
by careful observation.)

But the rutabaga
is already in the stockpot
with the parsnips
who know only
parsnip things.

So none of the winter roots
can tell you
what you need to know:

How to tell him why
you are home late on Thursdays,
why you stand at the kitchen window
while he still sleeps,
when spring will come,
and when you both
can follow the old path
to the far field
to find the wild asparagus.
