If All the Angels

What would we do
if the angels stopped
flying down?

If none came
in wheels of fire
with stilling wings
with white arms
bearing lilies
and news of the Mystery?

If all the black graces
of the dark night waters
and green men
of the summer-dusked woods
stilled their secret conversations
and rough dances?

Would we still pause
at the edge
of the night lake
at the edge
of the evening wood
at the edge of the
sunset field
and wait for grace?
