Hesitation

Looking over her shoulder
for days at a time
hesitating forward
through the salty fog.

The past captures you sometimes
and holds you with a pleading hand.

Don’t go yet.
Not yet.

She looks down the seaside streets
to see where her steps were.

The fog rolls down to the harbor
where the ship waits.
